Police yesterday deployed heavily at the Uganda Christian
University (UCU) in Mukono District in anticipation of a planned
peaceful demonstration by students.
However, the strike did not take place.
Acting district police commander Muhamad Tukundane said the students wrote to the Force, requesting for permission to demonstrate.
Acting district police commander Muhamad Tukundane said the students wrote to the Force, requesting for permission to demonstrate.
“After receiving the letter, we had to heavily deploy officers to ensure that they do not demonstrate,” he said.
The students are aggrieved over the university’
annual 10 per cent fees increment, which they said is not commensurate
with the “poor feeding, dark and dusty roads within the campus,
restricting students’ access to the university through one gate and
studying without break.”
Under the current university fees structure, a
non-resident student studying Bachelor of Business Administration pays
Shs1.9m per semester while a resident pays Shs2.8m. With the annual
increment, a non-resident student will pay Shs2,090,000 while a resident
will pay Shs3,180,000.
The students also said the university study
programme is rigorous, with some lectures ending very late yet some of
them stay far away from campus.
